John W. Ambrose 
John was born in July 1849 in Morgan County, Virginia.1 John's father was William Henry Ambrose and his mother was Anna Eliza Virginia Snowdeal. His paternal grandparents were Daniel Ambrose and Sophia Marquart. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Tice, Jake, Columbus, Nathan, Margaret, Mary and Jenny. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 68 on November 3rd, 1917 in Portland County, Oregon.2 Death Notes
There are conflicting stories as to his death. He has been reported as dying in 1889; or during WW I (1918) in Portland, Oregon, after being hit by a train on a RR bridge, while working as a civilian guard.
General Notes
John followed his brother Jacob to Oregon in about 1888. They went by covered wagon and were stranded for a time in the desert when they ran out of water. John struck out on his own, found water, and came back for his family. They settled in the John Day valley where he became a sheep rancher. He was elected sheriff of Grant County Oregon and served two terms in the 1890's. A shackling device called the "Oregon Boot" was used by him, and is now in the museum in Canyon City.
