Louis, known as the Pious, was born in August 0778 in Chasseneuil, Lot-et-Garonne near Poitiers, Aquitaine, France.  The Pious' father was Charlemagne Holy Roman Emperor and his mother was Hildegarde.  His paternal grandparents were King Pepin III ("the Short") of Franks and Bertrada II de Laon; his maternal grandparents were Duke Gerold I of Swabia and Imma of Swabia. He had a brother and two sisters, named Pepin, Bertha and Ermentrude. He had two half-sisters named Aupais and Hiltrude.  He died at the age of 61 on June 20th, 0840 in Petersaue, Ingelheim, Rheinhessan, Hesse-Darmstadt.  He was buried in Aachen Cathedral.
