William, known as the Protector, was born in 1146 in Pembroke, Wales.  The Protector's father was John ("the Marshall") Fitz Gilbert and his mother was Sibilla de Salisbury.  His paternal grandfather was Gilbert FitzRobert; his maternal grandparents were Walter ("the Sheriff") de Salisbury and Sybil Chaworth.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 73 on May 14th, 1219 in Caversham Manor, Berkshire, England.  He was buried in Round Chapel of Knight's Temple, London, Middlesex, Eng.
