Herbert's father was Joseph S Medearis and his mother was Isabelle Horrocks.  His paternal grandparents were John Wesley Medaris and Sirrelda Barnett. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Oliver, Orange, Jerome, Andrew, John, Hazel, Hattie and Florence. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Boyd, David, Harold, Howard, Josephine, Catherine, Imajean and Evelyn.
