Martha was born about 1867 in Ohio. Martha's father was George Washington Medaris and her mother was Matilda Ann McDavitt. Her paternal grandparents were Oliver Medaris and Wilmuth Redmond. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Zachariah, Charles, Gideon, Thomas, Chemiah, Eli, Manerva and Ruth. She was the youngest of the nine children. She had six half-brothers and six half-sisters, named William, Oliver, Elijah, Levi, Jesse, George, Synthia, Hester, Lib, Elizabeth, Matilda and Mary.-
