Sarah was born on September 22nd, 1852. Sarah's father was Abraham Medaris and her mother was Sarah Elisabeth Bledsoe. Her paternal grandparents were James Davis Medaris and Levisa King. She had three brothers and eight sisters, named Francis, William, Phillip, Mary, Levisa, Juda, Polina, Maria, Margaret, Ella and Laura. She was the oldest of the twelve children.
